2016 Club Championships

Merton Gymnastics Club Championships 2016

On Sunday 12th June, Merton Gymnastics Club hosted its annual club championships at Canons Leisure Centre in Mitcham. All gymnasts on a Better gymnastics course at Canons, Clapham and Crystal Palace Leisure Centres were invited to compete, along with squad gymnasts from Merton and Clapham Gymnastics Clubs. In total, 215 gymnasts entered, with approximately 600 spectators attending across the whole day.

Kirsty Reece, competition organiser and Regional Gymnastics Development Officer for GLL, said “After much planning and organising, the event was a huge success. It was a long day for all involved, but worth it to see everything come together and for the gymnasts to get an opportunity to show their family and friends what they have been working so hard to achieve. Thank you to all of the coaches for their hard work in preparing the gymnasts, and also to the volunteers who gave up their time to support on the day. Without you, it would not have been possible!”

Merton Gymnastics Club Championships 2015

On Sunday 12th July Merton Gymnastics Club held it’s first Club Championships in over 5 years, with 70 gymnasts competing from Club squads and the Canons Leisure Centre Better Gymnastics programme.

Gymnasts of all ages and abilities competed on floor and vault, with the WA development gymnasts also competing on beam. Our pre-school gymnasts showcased their skills by performing a routine on the floor beam, as well as a squat on vault. Over the course of the day, we awarded 26 gold medals, 17 silver medals, 12 bronze medals, and ribbons for those gymnasts finishing 4th, 5th or 6th. All pre-school gymnasts were awarded a gold medal for being so fantastic, especially as they are all under 5yrs!

A massive thank you needs to go to our volunteers, without whom we couldn’t have pulled off such a successful event. From parents running the refreshments, raffle & face painting, to our gymnasts helping out as runners, marshals, and assisting with the stalls.

We also had Sparkles and More selling some fabulous leotards, bags and clothing, and Simon Roe Photography capturing all of the gymnasts’ amazing routines. All of the images are on his website, so please see the coaches for details on how to purchase photos online.

Well done to all of the gymnasts that took part. For many of the gymnasts, this was their first taste of competition, and they did a fantastic job!
